Doom Eternal’s Horde mode unveiled ahead of the game’s ‘biggest free update’
It will also include Battlemode 2.0 and new Master Levels
Id Software has unveiled Doom Eternal’s new arcade style Horde mode, which launches on October 26 as part of title update 6.66.
Doom Eternal game director Hugo Martin discussed the update and played through the first mission of Horde mode during a live stream.
Billed as the game’s “biggest free update yet”, 6.66 also includes Battlemode 2.0 and two new Master Levels.
Battlemode, which sees one fully-armed Doom slayer taking on two player-controlled demons in round-based battles, has been refreshed with the introduction of a new arena and streak-based rewards.
Id Software announced in July that it was developing a new single-player Horde mode.
It said Horde mode would be released at the expense of a previously planned multiplayer Invasion mode, which would have enabled users to take on the form of demons and invade other players’ campaigns.
Explaining Invasion’s cancellation, executive producer Marty Stratton said “the unforeseen consequences of the pandemic and remote working impacted the progress of development for this addition.
“Over this time, we have also seen and heard how many of you enjoy the range of gameplay and combat available in the expansions and master levels.
“With these factors in mind, we have decided to redirect our focus from Invasion Mode to creating a totally new single-player horde mode. We’re confident this horde mode will offer you more of the diversity and challenge you’re looking for in the game.
“In addition, the team continues to work on a refresh of Battlemode that includes a more competitive, rank-based structure, a number of gameplay and balance updates and another new map.”
