Doom Eternal director says he ‘already has ideas’ for the future

Doom Eternal’s creative director has said he already has ideas for the team’s next project, and suggested that it could already be forming plans for the future.

Speaking in a Joe Rogan Experience interview, Id Software’s Hugo Martin said it’s “hard to say” how long it will be before the team moves fully on to the next game, as it’s also juggling DLC plans for Eternal.

“We’re already moving on to… I don’t want to say ‘the next thing’ – that is a PR answer, because I’m not allowed to say that – but we have ideas, certainly, and DLC [for Doom Eternal],” he said.

“Certainly we’re always dual-tracking things and talking always, because you never know when the cool idea is going to come along and you’re [always] jotting down notes,” he added. “We keep those conversations going on the side and see how it goes.”

Id has previously said that Doom Eternal will receive two single-player DLC expansions within a year of its release.

Following a four-month delay, the Doom Eternal release date is March 20, 2020 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

According to new Id Software president Marty Stratton, Doom Eternal will be double the size of its 2016 predecessor. “It’s the most epic and best thing that we’ve ever created at the studio,” he said at a media event attended by VGC in January.

“Our levels are bigger than they’ve ever been, we have double the amount of demons and from beginning to end you’re going to experience things that are always new.

“I refer to this as sort of the game version of a ‘page-turner’… even down to the last boss fight, you’re going to see things that you hadn’t up to that point.”

Stratton also claimed that the console version of Eternal is “really special” thanks to the developer’s strong understanding of the aging platforms.

“This game is, I think, the best technology we’ve ever made,” he said. “We’re at the end of a hardware cycle where engine teams really understand the hardware and are getting the most out of it.

“We’ve increased graphics fidelity, polygon count… everything is pushed in this game and it still runs on all the consoles that Doom 2016 ran on.”
