Discord is officially rolling out on PlayStation consoles from today

Discord is officially rolling out on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles starting today.

Eight months after the announcement of the planned partnership between Sony and the messaging platform, Discord confirmed on Monday that support is “gradually rolling out” to US users, with additional countries to follow.

“If you’ve ever connected your Discord account to another service that allows you to display your activity, it works similarly here,” the firm explained. “Once your Discord account is linked, the game you’re currently playing on either PS4 or PS5 will be shown as your activity, just like that!”

UPDATE: Discord’s PlayStation support is now rolling out to users in Europe.

ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: PlayStation users can opt to display their PlayStation Network online ID on their profile so Discord friends can add them. “It’s especially great for knowing if your friend is currently playing a game that supports cross-play on another platform,” Discord said.

To connect a Discord account to a PlayStation Network account, users need to open up Discord and head into User Settings > Connections. On this page, a newly-added PlayStation icon will complete the connection.

Discord was founded in 2015 as a platform for video game players to chat while playing online. Today, it has over 140 million monthly users, with many communities dedicated to a range of topics related to gaming and beyond.

Sony made a minority investment in the platform last year, ahead of its announced partnership.

“Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together,” SIE CEO Jim Ryan said at the time.

“Empowering players to create communities and enjoy shared gaming experiences is at the heart of what we do, so we are beyond excited to start this journey with one of the world’s most popular communication services.”
