Devolver Digital has acquired Serious Sam and Talos Principle studio Croteam
Deal cements a long-running partnership between the two companies
US publisher Devolver Digital has acquired Croteam, the Croatian developer behind the Serious Sam series and The Talos Principle.
Croteam is best known for the first-person shooter franchise Serious Sam, which was originally published in 2001 by Gathering of Developers.
Several of Gathering of Developers’ founders would later found Devolver, which signed Serious Sam 3: BFE as one of its first publishing projects.
The pair have since partnered on over 10 titles across PC, consoles, VR and mobile platforms.
“Croteam and Devolver Digital have been dating for so long that we decided to go ahead and just get married,” Devolver said on Wednesday. “Devolver has acquired Croteam…or maybe Croteam has acquired Devolver…who could really know at this point in the relationship.
“What’s certain is that our future together is ultra exciting with new projects like The Talos Principle 2, more Serious Sam games, and original IP from Croteam and the Croteam Incubator studios.
“Croteam will of course keep total creative freedom and Devolver Digital gets to keep making dumb recommendations that Croteam just ignores – we prefer it that way.”
Serious Sam 4 released for Steam and Google Stadia in late September, ahead of a planned PS4 and Xbox One release in 2021.
