Destiny mobile game ‘could get announced soon’, it’s claimed

A mobile game based on Destiny could be getting announced soon, it’s claimed.

Threads account Destiny Bulletin posted a link to a story stating that a game called Destiny Rising was in development by Bungie and NetEase.

While the story isn’t new – the existence of the game was first reported on two years ago – there’s been no real update beyond an initial report claiming it was in the works.

Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb then replied to Destiny Bulletin’s post on Threads, saying the game does indeed exist and that more information could be on the way.

“Yeah, this is real,” Grubb wrote. “Not a lot of people from Bungie working on it. It could get announced soon.”

When asked by another user if he knew much about the game, Grubb replied: “It’s going to be Destiny on mobile, but with a lot of changes. Hero characters instead of building your own character, for example.”

The existence of a mobile game based on Destiny was first suggested back in 2022, following a report by The Game Post.

Citing a source said to be familiar with NetEase’s development plans, the site claimed Bungie and NetEase had been working on a new Destiny game for well over two years at that point (meaning it would be more than four years by now).

Before Bungie was acquired by Sony, NetEase invested $100 million to become a minority shareholder in the developer in 2018. At the time, the Destiny studio said the deal would help it “explore new directions” and “build new worlds”.

Bungie announced in July that it was laying off 220 staff (roughly 17% of the studio), with a further 155 staff being “integrated” into Sony Interactive Entertainment.

If Grubb’s claim is true that the mobile Destiny game doesn’t have many Bungie staff working on it, these mass layoffs may not have necessarily affected its development.
