Announced at E3 2016 and released for PS4 in November 2019, Death Stranding is the first title from Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima since he split with Konami in 2015.
It features a cast of high-profile actors including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Lindsay Wagner and director Guillermo del Toro.
Kojima has described Death Stranding as “a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society”.
VGC’s Death Stranding review called the game “a bloated, showy post-apocalyptic melodrama that makes a meal of some engrossing mechanics and themes.”
Analysis has revealed that of the some 120 core developers who worked on the game at Kojima Productions, more than half also worked on Kojima’s final Konami title, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Kojima Productions was scheduled to deliver two Death Stranding sessions at GDC in San Francisco this month, but cancelled plans to participate at the event prior to its eventual postponement due to concerns over the coronavirus.
Kojima Productions AI programmer Eric Johnson was due to discuss unique AI challenges faced during the game’s development, while Kojima was going to give an hour-long talk on Death Stranding’s design philosophy.
