Cyberpunk 2077’s street date has been broken
CD Projekt asks players to avoid posting footage online after copies are sent out early
Cyberpunk 2077’s street date has been broken, with Best Buy said to have sent out Collector’s Editions ahead of schedule.
Two Reddit users claim to have received their $249.99 Collector’s Editions from the US retailer in packaging that clearly states: “Do not sell before December 10, 2020.”
Multiple Twitter users also say they have received the game early from Best Buy.
On Wednesday CD Projekt warned players who receive copies of Cyberpunk 2077 early that it will seek to remove any footage of the game published before an embargo lifts on December 9 in a bid to avoid spoiling it for other players.
During an earnings call last week, CD Projekt president Adam Kiciński addressed recently leaked gameplay showing the unpatched physical version of the game running on PS4, which one consumer posted online after obtaining an early copy.
“Regarding the leak, fortunately, there were not too many spoilers because this is the ugliest thing installing the game before it is released. So, it was not harmful,” he said.
Shortly after the leak, CD Projekt released the first official gameplay of Cyberpunk 2077 running on PS4 Pro and PS5 via backwards compatibility. The video highlighted some of the exact same areas as the leaked footage and included a number of fixes coming in a day one patch on December 10.
One of the Reddit users who obtained their Collector’s Edition early initially claimed the PS4 version came with a 56GB day one patch, although they later said they were unsure if it was in fact the launch day patch or a separate content download.
In late October the Cyberpunk 2077 release date was pushed back by 21 days to December 10, marking a third delay for a game originally scheduled to launch in April.
In a joint statement, CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwiński and head of studio Adam Badowski said the biggest challenge facing the company was preparing and testing nine different versions of the game across current-gen consoles, next-gen ones and PC.
And in a follow-up conference call, CD Projekt suggested the delay was due to issues with the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game.
Buy Cyberpunk 2077
Last week the company said it had delayed Cyberpunk 2077’s DLC reveal until after the game’s release and that it expects to discuss its separate Cyberpunk multiplayer game early next year.
Cyberpunk 2077’s photo mode was also revealed in a new trailer released on Wednesday.
