Cult classic action game is no longer getting a movie

A film adaptation of Sleeping Dogs is reportedly canceled, according to lead actor Donnie Yen.

The film, which planned to adapt Square Enix‘s 2012 crime drama is now reportedly shelved, having first been announced in 2017. The film was planned to be produced by Neal Moritz, one of the names behind the Fast & Furious franchise.

Now, Donnie Yen has told Polygon that the film is effectively dead.

“I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights,” Yen said.

“I waited for years. Years. And I really want to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately… I don’t know, you know how Hollywood goes, right? I spent many, many years on it. It was an unfortunate thing.”

Sleeping Dogs was released in 2012 for PS3 and Xbox 360. The open-world title was well received by critics and spawned a PS4 and Xbox One remaster and a spin-off multiplayer game called Triad Wars, which was eventually cancelled in 2015.

Developed by now-shuttered Vancouver studio United Front Games, Sleeping Dogs follows an undercover police officer on a mission to take down dangerous criminal organizations.
