Chris Avellone wants to work on The Witcher series

Veteran writer and designer Chris Avellone has said he would like to work on The Witcher and Overwatch series, if given the chance.

The experienced narrative designer, who has worked on some of the games industry’s biggest franchises, told VGC that there isn’t much left on his bucket list other than the CD Projekt and Blizzard franchises.

“In my career I’ve had the chance to work on Fallout, World of Darkness, Dying Light 2, Planescape, System Shock… it’s been really, really good,” he said.

“I feel like I’ve worked on – or am currently working on – all of the game series that I really enjoy or love. The Witcher would be cool, now that I think about it… that would be very cool! I don’t know if there are any ambitions beyond that for me, other than The Witcher.

Avellone is a known fan of Overwatch and frequently posts about Blizzard’s shooter on social media. He also has a connection to the franchise, via Blizzard’s lead narrative designer.

“Overwatch would be fun too,” he added. “I worked with Michael Chu, their lead narrative designer, at Obsidian and I really like his writing. I really love writers who when I read their work I don’t have any comments!

“He’s a good writer and I love the characterisation in that game. I’m a comic book nerd so seeing superheroes in a game environment warms my heart”

Avellone is a writer on Respawn’s upcoming Jedi: Fallen Order, his second Star Wars game after writing and designing fan-favourite Knights of the Old Republic 2.

He said he’s found returning to the Star Wars franchise “very smooth” and he thinks fans will appreciate some of the “unusual” directions Respawn has taken with Fallen Order’s plot.

Avellone also offered his critique of the latest Star Wars movie, stating that while he enjoyed “some bits” of The Last Jedi, overall he “didn’t like the execution” of its story.
