Call of Duty Mobile’s launch quarter ‘the best since Pokémon Go’s’
Activision’s shooter reportedly downloaded 180 million times from Sep-Dec 2019
Call of Duty Mobile is estimated to have been downloaded over 180 million times across iOS and Android devices in the three months following its worldwide release on October 1, 2019.
“This was the best quarter for a game since Pokémon Go’s launch in Q3 2016,” according to mobile data tracker Sensor Tower.
The analytics firm previously said Activision’s shooter was downloaded 148 million times across iOS and Android devices in its first month of availability – again second only to record holder Pokémon Go, which achieved 163 million downloads in its first 30 days, despite Niantic’s game receiving a staggered worldwide rollout.
Call of Duty Mobile was the most downloaded game in the fourth quarter of 2019 on both the App Store and Google Play, in both Europe and the US.
Activision recently previewed some of the new multiplayer content set to be introduced in Call of Duty Mobile Season 3, which will include a recreation of Modern Warfare 2’s Scrapyard map when it launches this month.
Sensor Tower recently said Pokémon Go had its best commercial year to date in 2019, having grossed $894 million (up from $832 million in 2016).
Mobile games generated an estimated $61.7 billion worldwide in 2019, up 12.8 percent compared to the previous year, according to the firm.
Tencent’s Honor of Kings was the top-grossing iOS title, generating $1.43 billion, while NCoft’s Lineage M led the way on Google Play with almost $691 million grossed.
Spending in mobile games accounted for 74 percent of total in-app spending last year.
