Borderlands 3 PC launches with ‘best numbers in Gearbox history’

Borderlands 3 attracted more concurrent players at launch than any other PC game in Gearbox history.

That’s according to CEO Randy Pitchford, who claimed “launch day peak concurrent players of Borderlands 3 is about *twice-as-high* as the all time peak concurrent players of Borderlands 2”.

He said on Twitter the day after the game launched: “Incredible day with new peak concurrency (and climbing). Best numbers in Gearbox history!”

Borderlands 3 released on September 13, 2019. On PC, the game is available exclusively through the Epic Games store until April 2020.

Ahead of its release, VGC caught up with Paul Sage, creative director at Gearbox Software, to discuss balancing corporate and community expectations, the dangers of slipping into creative boredom during lengthy development cycles, and the importance of humour to the series, among other topics.

According to publisher Take-Two, The Borderlands franchise has shipped more than 48 million units worldwide, with 2012’s Borderlands 2 accounting for 22 million copies.
