Former Sony exec Yoshida shares ‘personal theory’ for why the Soulsborne hasn’t been revisited

Bloodborne: PlayStation veteran explains Miyazaki theory for missing PS5 remaster

Veteran PlayStation exec Shuhei Yoshida has explained why he believes the popular PS4 From Software title Bloodborne hasn’t been properly brought to PS5 yet.

Fans have long called for From and PlayStation to revisit the critically acclaimed action RPG, which was directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki and published by Sony in 2015, in either a PS5 remaster or a PC version. Currently, the game is playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility, but hasn’t even had a patch to improve its performance.

Speaking in his first interview since quitting Sony this month, former PlayStation Worldwide Studios boss Yoshida said he believed the reason behind the lack of Bloodborne updates was because the game’s director does not want anyone else to tackle development, and that he’s likely too busy with other projects to handle it himself.

“Bloodborne has always been the most asked-for thing, and people wonder why we haven’t really done anything, not even an update, or remake, or remaster which should be easy – we’re known for doing so many remasters. Some people get frustrated,” he told Kinda Funny.

“I only have my personal theory for that situation. I left first-party [development], so I don’t know what’s going on. But my theory is, because I remember [Hidetaka] Miyazaki really loved Bloodborne and what he created.

“I think he is interested [in bringing back Bloodborne], but he is so successful, and so busy. So he can’t do it himself, but he doesn’t want anyone else to touch it. So that’s my theory, and the PlayStation team respect his wish. That’s my guess and theory… I’m not revealing any secret information.”

In the same interview, Yoshida discussed why the PS Vita failed, and Sony’s push into live service games.

Speaking last summer, From Software president Miyazaki said he’d “love more players to be able to enjoy” Bloodborne, but wouldn’t be drawn on the potential of a remaster of PC version actually happening.

“I know for a fact these guys want a Bloodborne PC port,” he said, referring to From Software producer Yasuhiro Kitao and interpreter Bobby Simpson. “If I say I want one, I’ll get in trouble as well. But it’s nothing I’m opposed to.

“Obviously, as one of the creators of Bloodborne, my personal, pure honest opinion is I’d love more players to be able to enjoy it,” Miyazaki continued.

“Especially as a game that is now coming of age, one of those games of the past that gets lost on older hardware—I think any game like that, it’d be nice to have an opportunity for more players to be able to experience that and relive this relic of the past. So as far as I’m concerned, that’s definitely not something I’d be opposed to.”
