Baldur’s Gate 3 director says he thought the game would be too short because of all the cut content

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke says he was worried Baldur’s Gate 3 would be too small because of all the planned content that had been cut.

In a new video interview with BAFTA, Vincke – who was also the game’s director – said the original plan was to make the game even larger, but these plans were originally cut down.

“This is a really random tidbit, but Moonrise Towers used to be  two towers,” Vincke explained. “And now, we shipped with only one tower. And for a long time, there was actually the ruins of the second tower, and then we removed that also.

“So there was only one tower, but originally we planned on having two towers. The reason we removed the extra tower was purely productionally. It was just, the game was getting too big and so we had to cut that out.

Laughing and acknowledging that Baldur’s Gate 3 was ultimately “a very big game indeed”, Vincke also revealed that the game was going to have even more locations which were eventually cut, making him worry about the game’s length as a result.

“You would be surprised to know that we actually had many more regions that we planned to make”, he said.

“I was afraid the game was going to be too short originally, but I’ve notoriously always been very bad at judging the length of our games.”

Any players hoping the cut content will eventually be added to the game will likely be disappointed, because Larian has already confirmed that it’s moved on from Baldur’s Gate 3 and is now focusing on two new projects based on its own IPs.

“Baldur’s Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart,” Vincke said back in March. “We’ll forever be proud of it but we’re not going to continue in it.

“We’re not going to make new expansions which everybody is expecting. We’re not going to make Baldur’s Gate 4 which everybody is expecting us to do. We’re going to move on. We’re going to move away from D&D and we’re going to start making a new thing.”
