Avengers’ Spider-Man will be exclusive to PlayStation
Update: Square Enix confirms PlayStation-only Spider-Man release in early 2021
PlayStation versions of Marvel’s Avengers will feature Spider-Man as an exclusive playable character.
That’s according to a now-removed retail listing from online retailer Base.com, which claimed in its game description that the character would be available “exclusively on PS4”.
It’s not clear if the marketing blurb was supplied by publisher Square Enix. However, the company has previously confirmed it has a global marketing deal with PlayStation, and that there would be “surprises for PlayStation players”.
UPDATE 03/08/20: Crystal Dynamics has confirmed that Spider-Man will be added to the Marvel’s Avengers roster in early 2021, “available at no additional cost to owners of the base game, exclusively on PlayStation”.
“When Spider-Man comes to our stable of heroes, we’ll be marking his debut with an in-game event that will introduce him to the wider world of Marvel’s Avengers,” wrote Crystal Dynamics’ Jeff Adams. “The event is comprised of a series of unique challenges for the hero to take on, testing his abilities, and yielding some exciting results.
“And like the rest of our heroes in Marvel’s Avengers, we will offer multiple cosmetic outfits and gameplay experience options, so you can make your vision of the wall crawler a reality.”
ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: PlayStation parent Sony also has the movie rights for Spider-Man and recently enjoyed huge success with Insomniac’s Marvel Spider-Man game, which has sold in excess of 13 million units, making it the best-selling super hero video game to date.
A new game, Marvel Spider-Man: Miles Morales, will release for PlayStation 5 in the console’s launch window later this year.
Last week Square Enix detailed a Marvel’s Avengers beta test, which will launch first on PlayStation 4. The firm also announced that character Hawkeye will be included in the game’s roster.
Marvel’s Avengers is also set to launch on next-generation consoles later this year and owners of the current-gen version will be able to upgrade at no additional cost.
On the features of the next-gen versions of Avengers, the publisher said to expect “extremely fast” load times, boosted resolution and fidelity, improved texturing and armour destruction, ray tracing, and more.
On PlayStation 5, Avengers will be “fully utilizing” the ultra-high speed SSD, Square Enix claimed, as well as the PS5 DualSense advanced haptics, and immersive spatial audio.
PS5 will also provide players with their choice of Enhanced Graphics Mode or High Framerate mode.
