Astral Chain is Platinum’s first ever UK No.1
Switch exclusive tops boxed games chart
Astral Chain has marked the first time developer PlatinumGames has reached No.1 in the UK physical sales chart.
The boxed version of the Switch exclusive is Platinum’s fourth most successful launch in the region reports GI.biz, and its second biggest new IP launch since Bayonetta in January 2010.
Platinum’s previous highest charting game was Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in 2013, which reached No.2.
It’s worth noting digital sales are not included in the UKIE/GfK UK charts data and publisher Nintendo does not share digital numbers, so the overall picture of how well Astral Chain performed in the region is unclear.
Astral Chain beat three other new releases to No.1; Wreckfest by THQ Nordic, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan by Supermassive Games and Remedy‘s new action game Control. UKIE/GfK said only around 1,500 sales separated No.1 from No.4.
Astral Chain is the directorial debut of NieR: Automata designer Takahisa Taura. Hideki Kamiya, director of Bayonetta and Devil May Cry, provided supervision.
VGC’s Astral Chain review calls the title “a one of a kind combat experience and Platinum’s most well-rounded adventure to date.” See what other critics thought of the game in our Astral Chain review round-up.
