As Iconic RPG Chrono Trigger turns 30, Square Enix promises commemorative projects

Square Enix has said that it plans to release “various projects” related to Chrono Trigger to celebrate the game’s anniversary.

The RPG turns 30 this year, and to mark the occasion Square Enix has announced that it will launch several “projects” around the franchise. It’s unclear what these projects will manifest as, be that a new game, merchandise, or a release of the original title on new platforms.

“As we mark the 30th anniversary, we will be launching various projects that go beyond the world of the game over the next year to express our gratitude to everyone who has played Chrono Trigger so far, so please look forward to it,” Square Enix wrote on its social media channels.

Fans have long requested a remake of the classic RPG, however outside of ports to modern systems, the game hasn’t been revisited as frequently as Square’s main RPG series, Final Fantasy.

Chrono Trigger was originally released in 1995 for the SNES. The game was developed by the “dream team,” a fan name given to the trio of developers involved in the project. They include Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horri, and the late Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.

Chrono Cross, the sequel to Chrono Trigger, was released on PlayStation in 1999.  A remake of the game, Chrono Cross The Radical Dreamers Edition, was released in 2022.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition also included Radical Dreamers – Le Trésor Interdit, an “audio novel” that was originally released for the SNES Satellaview add-on in Japan only.

Radical Dreamers Edition made several changes to the original, such as the ability to avoid random battles. Character models were also updated and the game’s soundtrack was also remastered.
