Apex Legends could soft launch for mobile this year

Apex Legends could soft launch for mobile by the end of 2020, Electronic Arts has said.

Providing an update in an investor call on Monday, EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson said: “We have [Plants vs. Zombies 3] in soft-launch [and] we’ve talked about having Apex Legends in soft launch by the end of this year.”

EA has long signalled its intention to bring the popular battle royale title to mobile, right from its launch in February 2019.

The mobile and Chinese markets have been a huge part of the success of Apex’s rivals Fortnite and PUBG and could significantly expand the playerbase.

EA said in October 2019 that Apex Legends had attracted 70 million players since launch.

PUBG Mobile has been downloaded more than 600 million times, according to its developer.

EA previously said to expect Apex Legends mobile in its current fiscal year, which runs until April 2021. However, these plans may have been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week EA announced Apex Legends will be released for Nintendo Switch and Steam in fall 2020. The Respawn title will also be updated with full cross-platform play between Xbox One, PS4, Origin, Steam and Switch.

Game director Chad Grenier also confirmed that a limited time event, Lost Treasures Collection, will run from June 23 until July 7.

The event will feature the Armed and Dangerous Evolved mode, a new Town Takeover,  an exclusive Event Prize Track, 24 event limited premium cosmetics and more.

You can find more details on Lost Treasures Collection on the Apex website.
