Apex and Jedi: Fallen Order studio confirms its working on an original game

Titanfall, Apex Legends and Jedi: Fallen Order studio Respawn Entertainment has confirmed it’s working on an original game project.

In a tweet published on Friday, one of the studio’s design directors shared a job advertisement and confirmed it was for a new IP.

Previously, job ads have stated that the studio is forming a small incubation team to work on “new, practical technologies to enable ‘adventuring forever’.”

Respawn, which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary, has been one of Electronic Arts‘ most successful developers in recent years.

Battle royale title Apex Legends has attracted over 70 million players since its launch in February 2019, while Star Wars title Jedi: Fallen Order exceeded the company’s expectations with over ten million sales.

Apex Legends director Chad Grenier recently said that Respawn would “probably” expand Apex Legends “beyond battle royale” in the future and that the company regularly discussed taking the free-to-play game in new directions.

Meanwhile, Electronic Arts suggested last summer that Respawn would create a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel.

CEO Andrew Wilson stated that the game’s 10m player milestone was “a rare achievement for the first title in an entirely new franchise,” suggesting further Jedi games could be released.

As for Titanfall, the FPS series which established Respawn, studio head Vince Zampella claimed in May 2020 that the franchise could yet return.

“There’s nothing currently in development,” he told IGN. “But it’s always there. You see the little bits of stuff coming back [through the lore in Apex Legends]. At some point, I would personally like to see some kind of resurrection there. We’ll see if I can make that happen.”
