Alone in the Dark sold ‘below expectations’, Embracer Group says

The reboot of Alone in the Dark sold worse than expected, Embracer Group says.

As part of its earnings report for its financial year ending March 2024, Embracer noted that while some of its releases sold in line with expectations, Pieces Interactive‘s survival horror reboot didn’t.

It also noted that Outcast: A New Beginning, a sequel to 1999 action game Outcast, performed similarly poorly.

The company said its Q4 results were “impacted by a softer than expected performance for the two titles Alone in the Dark and Outcast: A New Beginning, developed and published by THQ Nordic“.

Later in the report, it specified: “Alone in the Dark and Outcast: A New Beginning both saw a positive reception from users, but a mixed reception from critics and ultimately performed below management expectations.”

However, it also pointed out that both Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection and South Park: Snow Day “delivered within expectations”, despite both seeing a mixed reception from players and critics.

Meanwhile, Tomb Raider I-III Remasted “was positively received and performed above management expectations,” Embracer said.

Alone in the Dark sold ‘below expectations’, Embracer Group says

Alone in the Dark was released in March and currently has a Metacritic score between 63 and 66, depending on the platform.

VGC’s Alone in the Dark review criticised the game for its design choices, saying it was “let down by annoying and repetitive puzzles, poor combat and frequent glitches”.

“There’s a good game in there somewhere but you have to put up with a lot of frustration to find it,” we wrote.
