Activision says two unannounced games based on existing IP will release this year

Activision will release two unannounced games based on existing IP later this year.

Chief financial officer Dennis Durkin outlined the company’s release schedule during its first quarter earnings call on Tuesday.

“Turning to the second half of the year, our planned slate includes a new Call of Duty premium title, two releases based on our extensive library of IP from Activision, and Blizzard’s Shadowlands expansion for World of Warcraft,” he said.

No further details about the projects were offered, but during the company’s previous quarterly earnings call in February, Durkin confirmed plans to release “several remastered and reimagined” titles later this year.

One of those turned out to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, which hit PS4 in late March and Xbox One and PC a month later. Activision also recently soft-launched Crash Bandicoot Mobile.

In an interview with The Nine Club this week (see timestamped video below), professional skater Jason Dill also claimed that a new Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game is coming out in 2020.

In August 2019, Activision president Robert Kostich said the company had seen “great results” from remastering some its games over the last few years.

“If you look at Crash N. Sane Trilogy, Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Team Racing, there’re all incredible games that our teams have done a really great job at modernising for today’s platforms.

“The player response to each of these has been fantastic and I’d say for example, if you look at Crash N. Sane Trilogy, that one has sold through over 10 million copies, so they’re obviously having a big impact on our bottom line and a real impact there, but I’d say what’s really important is that it’s reaffirming the enduring nature of these franchises for us.”

Kostich added: “When you look at our IP library, we think there’s a lot of IP in there that fans are going to want to experience again, so on that one, I’d say stay tuned for some future announcements.”

Activision also said on Tuesday that the next premium Call of Duty game, which is expected to be a Black Ops title from Treyarch, “already looks great and remains on track for release later this year”.

And Call of Duty: Warzone has attracted over 60 million players since releasing on March 10, while 2019’s Modern Warfare has sold more copies and has more players “than any prior Call of Duty title at this point after its release”.
