Activision has acquired a studio to work on its new Call of Duty mobile game

Activision has acquired mobile game studio Digital Legends, which will support the development of a new entry in the Call of Duty series.

Barcelona-based Digital Legends, which is known for titles including its Respawnables (pictured) and Afterpulse series, has been working with three other Activision studios on the new Call of Duty project throughout 2021.

In August, Activision confirmed the formation of an internal mobile game development studio called Solid State, which was established to develop a new entry in the Call of Duty series. Beenox and Activision Shanghai are also working on the game.

“Digital Legends’s tenure developing highly-polished mobile titles is unparalleled,” said Activision’s head of mobile, Chris Plummer. “More importantly though, our teams already have been collaborating very closely for much of this year. We are building a world-class mobile development roster of talent and teams, and we look forward to what’s to come.”

Activision’s Solid State studio was first revealed in June by job listings which said the company was making “a new AAA mobile FPS in the Call of Duty franchise”.

The publisher first officially acknowledged the studio during its second quarter earnings call in August.

“As we think about long-term, where we see more compelling growth on the [mobile] platform, I’d say we believe there’s an opportunity to better connect mobile to the overall Call of Duty ecosystem and we’re aggressively hiring talent to help on this journey,” said Activision president Rob Kostich.

“We’ve created our own internal mobile studio and are driving a major recruiting effort, across Beenox and Activision Shanghai to support as well, and together these teams are leading an unannounced new mobile project in the Call of Duty franchise which we’re very excited about.”

The company launched free-to-play series entries Call of Duty Mobile in November 2019 and Warzone in March 2020. The former has been downloaded over 500 million times and the latter has attracted over 100 million players on consoles and PC, according to the publisher.

This year’s new premium series entry, Call of Duty: Vanguard, is scheduled for release on November 5, 2021.

On Thursday, Activision confirmed the release date for Caldera, the upcoming new map for Warzone which will herald the end of the existing Verdansk map and add dogfighting to the mix.
