A six-part Xbox documentary is coming to streaming platforms in December

A new six-part documentary series about the history of Xbox is coming next month.

Power On: The Story of Xbox will be releasing on December 13 on a number of free streaming platforms including Roku, IMDv TV, YouTube and Redbox.

The series will cover the entire 20-year history of the consoles, and it appears it won’t be shy to discuss the low points too.

You can watch the trailer in this embedded video:

From the struggles the team had showing off the original Xbox, to its extremely large controller, to the Xbox 360‘s infamous ‘red ring of death’ failures, the documentary’s trailer shows that it won’t be entirely positive.

Head of programming for Xbox, Tina Summerford, said: “The project began almost three years ago with a simple question: is there a compelling story behind the history of Xbox? The answer, it turns out, was yes, absolutely.

“So we partnered with an Emmy award-winning documentary film team to really dig in and help bring the story to life.

“At its core it’s a story about how Xbox started as a passion project from a small group of gamers within Microsoft and grew to become a source of joy for Xbox players around the world.”

The documentary trailer was shown as part of a special digital broadcast celebrating Xbox’s 20th anniversary.

In a GQ profile published to coincide with today’s anniversary, Microsoft’s head of gaming Phil Spencer reiterated that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be an Xbox console exclusive when it eventually releases, and said the company is encouraging him to think about a succession plan.

Sarah Bond, Microsoft’s head of gaming ecosystems, also revealed that the Xbox Game Pass project was originally envisioned as a rental service for games.
