A second Uncharted movie is officially in the works
The Tom Holland movie generated over $400m at the box office
Sony Pictures is working on a follow-up to its 2022 Uncharted movie, it’s announced.
The news was shared during the studio’s CineEurope presentation this week, as reported by Variety, in which it reportedly confirmed that Tom Holland would again play protagonist Nathan Drake.
The Uncharted movie, which had a $120 budget, launched in February 2022 and earned over $400 million worldwide. To date, only a handful of video game movie adaptations have earned more.
A post-credits scene at the end of Uncharted teased a potential sequel, and director Ruben Fleischer told Entertainment Weekly (warning: its article spoils the scene) that it was designed to “let audiences know that this, hopefully, wouldn’t be the last of them hearing of [Drake and Sully]”.
While Naughty Dog has claimed it’s moved on from the series, in April 2022, a recruiter at the studio seemingly hinted that Sony could be planning future Uncharted releases.
Announcing that she’d joined Naughty Dog, Christina-Marie Drake McBrearty said it was special “to be building future teams for not only new titles but for the legacy of Uncharted”.
A 2022 job listing also said that a new internal development team at Sony was co-developing a game with Naughty Dog based on “a beloved franchise”.
Other Sony-owned studios have previously developed Uncharted spin-offs or remasters, including Bend Studio (Uncharted: Golden Abyss) and Bluepoint Games (Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection).
