It looks like Apex Legends is set to get a new-gen upgrade soon.

According to reliable PlayStation patch tracker PlayStation Game Size, a PS5 version of Apex Legends has appeared on the PSN database.

The new addition is reportedly 80GB in size, but this doesn’t include any other updates that may be released alongside it.

At the moment, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S owners have to play the PS4 or Xbox One versions of Apex Legends respectively, because there are no bespoke new-gen versions.

Respawn said back in August 2021 that it was still planning to release a new-gen update for Apex Legends, but wasn’t ready to commit to a launch window at the time.

While the battle royale shooter is playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S via backwards compatibility, with a performance boost up to 1440p, publisher EA said in 2020 that “more formal enhancements [were] planned” for 2021, which have clearly since been delayed.

Asked to provide an update on those plans in a Reddit AMA last August, Respawn’s director of communications, Ryan Rigney, could only assure fans that a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S update was being worked on.

“Oh man, I WISH I had an update to share but we can’t say anything definitive at the moment—so can’t spoil anything here. Trust us tho, it’s in the works and we’re excited about it too,” he wrote.

Respawn Vancouver team director Steven Ferreira said in February 2021 that 120fps was one of the studio’s goals for Apex Legends’ next-gen update.

“Can’t promise anything but with the core mechanics ‘feel’ of Apex being such an important piece of the player experience this one is high on the priority list,” he said.
