A PS5 bug is reportedly causing discs to spin loudly even when they’re not in use
Issue occurs when users are playing digital games or streaming media
A number of PlayStation 5 owners are encountering what appears to be a bug related to the console’s Blu-ray drive.
As detailed on Reddit and Resetera, the issue results in PS5 discs spinning at various intervals, often loudly. Some users say it happens on the hour every hour, while others claim to have experienced it every 15-20 minutes.

While some users speculate that the spinning could be part of an authentication process, it reportedly occurs even when the inserted disc isn’t in use.
One Reddit user wrote: “I have the disc for Ghost of Tsushima in my PS5 at the moment and it spins up even if I’m playing Spider-Man or Demon’s Souls. I can understand it needing to check that the disc is still there, but surely it shouldn’t need to spin it that quickly/loudly to do so.”
Another user said: “My disc drive does exactly the same thing. Every 15-20 mins, it spins up for about 20 seconds, and it’s very loud. The PS4 and PS4 Pro did not do this; their disc drives were loud too, but they would only spin up when first launching a game (presumably to check the license). I have no idea why the PS5 is doing this, it’s really annoying.”
Last week Sony released a PS5 system software update which it said “improves system performance” on the console.
It also provided a solution to a PS5 download queue bug which was forcing users to factory reset their consoles.
