A new special edition Xbox ‘Cipher’ controller is reportedly set to be announced this month

Another new Xbox Series X/S wireless controller has seemingly leaked ahead of a reveal later this month.

Dataminer billbil-kun, who has an extensive track record of correctly leaking games, controllers and other hardware prior to their announcement, says Microsoft is preparing to release another colour variation of its standard Xbox Series X/S wireless controller.

According to their post on Dealabs, the new controller will be named the Red Cipher Special Edition Xbox Wireless Controller, and will feature a transparent shell.

If true, this would be the third controller in Xbox’s ‘Cipher’ series of wireless controller designs. Last year the company released the Sky Cipher controller, which featured a transparent blue shell, allowing players to see the controller’s inner workings, incluing the spinning rumble motors.

This was followed later in the year by the Ghost Cipher controller, which instead featured a transparent grey shell.

Based on the name and billbil-kun’s description, then, it seems all but certain that the Red Cipher controller will have a similar transparent appearance but will be red instead, as in our mock-up below:

This is not an official image of the Red Cipher controller – it’s a recoloured image of the Blue Cipher controller, to give an idea of how the red one could look.

According to billbil-kun, the Red Cipher controller “will be bright red with the buttons and the back of the controller in garnet red. The colour distribution matches exactly that of the Sky Cipher model with a translucent design as well.”

Although the release date for the Red Cipher controller is not yet known, the insider believes an announcement is coming this month, and that it will be available exclusively on Microsoft’s official store at a likely price of $69.99 / £64.99 / €69.99.
