Ori developer Moon Studios has hired a level designer whose only experience making games is with Media Molecule’s Dreams.

The PS4 game creation platform, which is designed to inspire creators with an accessible toolset, released in Early Access in 2019 before officially launching in February 2020.

Last week, Moon Studios CEO and game director Thomas Mahler said the company planned to interview a young designer who had only ever worked with Dreams, adding that he’d have “loved to have these tools available when I was starting out”.

The designer in question, Eupholace, used Dreams to create a 3D platformer called Trip’s Voyage, which can be seen in the trailer below.

Mahler wrote in a follow-up tweet this week: “And now it’s a done deal – We decided to officially hire this designer. 20 years old, worked for 2 years on a project in Dreams and soon he’ll be working as a Level Designer at Moon Studios!”

Responding to the announcement, Media Molecule co-founder and creative director Mark Healey said: “Fantastic news, exactly the kind of story that makes me feel it’s all been worthwhile, love it.”

Following 2015’s Ori and the Blind Forest and 2020’s Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Moon Studios’ next game is an action RPG set to be published by Private Division.

Media Molecule has hired a number of developers directly from the communities that play its games, which focus heavily on user generated content.

The creation tools in games like LittleBigPlanet and Dreams have also helped players find employment at other game studios too, Media Molecule community manager Tom Dent previously told VGC.

In an interview published to coincide with Dreams’ release in 2020, creative director Healey told VGC he one day hoped to see the game’s best user-created content be released as standalone titles on the PlayStation Store.

Media Molecule recently announced that studio co-founder and art director Kareem Ettouney would be leaving the company in early 2023.
