’84GB’ trends on Twitter as Call of Duty firm investigates huge patch

“84GB” trended worldwide on Twitter on Thursday as Activision said it was investigating a larger than expected Call of Duty patch for Xbox Modern Warfare and Warzone players.

The Xbox patch is more than double the size of the roughly 32GB update released on PS4, and larger than many full-sized games.

Modern Warfare and Warzone players have faced a succession of increasingly large game updates since the start of the year.

On Wednesday developer Infinity Ward warned players that the Modern Warfare and Warzone Season 4 update would be large, and claimed it was working to reduce the overall disc space that the games take up (now approaching 200GB).

“In order to reduce the overall disc space that MW and WZ take up, we’re compressing a bunch of assets,” the developer said. “Once installed, the S4 launch will only take up an additional 4GB on consoles for all of the new content.

“We’re continuing to sweep all assets to make size reductions where we can, and also further optimize future patches for size.”

Infinity Ward added that, “if helpful”, console players can uninstall the content packs for modes they’re not playing if they want to free up space.

Modern Warfare and Warzone Season 4 adds a large amount of new content, including a new Season Pass, In-Match Events for the Battle Royale game and a 50 v 50 team mode.

Warzone’s In-Match Events, including Jailbreak which returns all eliminated players to the match, can happen in any given game without advance notice.

Season 4 also introduces the Contraband Contract System, a new, rare contract with a permanent Blueprint Reward. Contraband contracts have a chance to spawn after a previous contract is completed.
