8 Deluxe is officially the best-selling Mario Kart ever
Switch racer approaches 40m units sold; only Wii Sports has sold more in the modern era
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is officially the series’ best selling entry ever.
In its latest financial results published on Thursday, Nintendo confirmed that the Switch racer had sold a further 3.34 million units during the six months ended September 30, 2021.
That means Deluxe has now sold 38.74 million units since it released in April 2017, surpassing Mario Kart Wii’s previous franchise record of 37.38 million.
The original version of Mario Kart 8, released in 2014, has sold a further 8.46 million copies on Wii U.

The racing game, which as its name suggests is a Deluxe version of the 2014 Wii U original, has sold continuously well since Switch launched in 2017.
According to Gfk data, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was one of the best selling games in seven European regions in 2020, and the third-best selling physical game in Europe overall last year.
Only one first-party Nintendo games has sold more copies than Mario Kart Deluxe in the modern era: Wii Sports at 82.9m (and that game was bundled with hardware).
On Thursday, Nintendo reported updated Switch hardware and software sales figures as part of its second quarter financial results.
The company said on Thursday that Switch had sold-in (shipped) 92.87 million units as of September 30, 2021 – up 3.83 million units since June 30.
