2K ‘looking closely’ at Borderlands 3 cross-platform play
Gearbox has “a very keen interest” in the feature
Borderlands 3 publisher 2K says support for cross-platform play is being investigated for the upcoming PS4, Xbox One and PC game.
Asked about the feature’s potential inclusion, a 2K spokesperson told GameSpot: “Cross-play is something we’re looking at closely, but we don’t have anything to confirm or announce at this time.”
Borderlands 3 cross-platform play appeared to have been inadvertently revealed by a Microsoft Store product listing for the game, although reference to the feature has since been removed.
Gearbox Software recently announced a Borderlands 3 release date of September 13, 2019. On PC, the game will be available exclusively through the Epic Games store until April 2020.
Responding to rumours of Borderland’s 3’s Epic Games store exclusivity prior to its official announcement, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford also hinted at the possibility of Borderlands cross-platform play.
“To me, exclusives are fine when they come w/ advantages and when they are short – say, six months,” he said.
“For what it’s worth, 2K’s decisions aside, myself and the team at Gearbox have a very keen interest in cross-platform play. We believe multi-platform support is a pre-requisite and Epic’s leadership with cross-platform support is helpful to our interests there.”
Gearbox will host a Borderlands 3 gameplay reveal livestream event on May 1. It promises to offer new details on the game’s story, characters and gear.
