Sonic Superstars – How to unlock Super Sonic
Every playable character can turn super – here’s how to get it
Can you turn into Super Sonic in Sonic Superstars?
Let’s face it, it wouldn’t be much of a Sonic game if there was no way to turn into Super Sonic at some point.
Thankfully, Super Sonic is indeed in Sonic Superstars, as are super versions of the other playable characters in the game.
Below, we’ll explain who Super Sonic is, how to unlock him and how to trigger him once he’s unlocked.
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Sonic Superstars, including one of its unlockable characters and their super transformation. We recommend beating the game first before reading this article, if you don’t want to have anything spoiled.
Sonic Superstars – Who is Super Sonic?
Super Sonic first appeared back in 1992, as a hidden secret in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Once players collected every Chaos Emerald in the game, they could turn into the near-invincible Super Sonic by collecting 50 rings then jumping into the air.
Super Sonic is a glowing golden version of Sonic who moves extremely quickly and can destroy enemies by running through them.
He’s not entirely invincible though, because some one-hit kill hazards – such as being crushed or falling off the bottom of the stage – can still kill him.
Sonic Superstars – How to unlock Super Sonic
The method to unlock Super Sonic in Sonic Superstars is similar to that in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
You have to gather all seven Chaos Emeralds in the game. You do this by finding the giant gold rings hidden in each stage and completing the ring-swinging Special Stages to earn each Emerald.
When you earn a Chaos Emerald, the giant ring from that stage permanently disappears, meaning you can’t just keep loading the level and jumping through the same giant ring seven times – you have to find seven separate giant rings throughout the game.
However, if you do find a giant ring and fail to complete the Special Stage, you can quit to the map screen and enter the stage again – the giant ring will still be there, meaning you can keep trying until you get the Emerald.
Sonic Superstars – How to trigger Super Sonic
When you get the seventh Chaos Emerald, you’ll be told that you’ve unlocked a unique power for each character.
This appears in your skill wheel as a white symbol, but that isn’t Super Sonic.
Instead, along with the unique power the seventh Emerald also unlocks an eighth power, which is a yellow symbol found right at the top of the skill wheel.
This skill will be greyed out until you collect 50 rings on a stage, at which point it’ll become available to select.
If you choose it, then press your special attack button, you’ll trigger Super Sonic.
This will turn you invincible and super fast, but your ring counter will start to go down. Once it reaches 0, you’ll turn back to regular Sonic, so you have to keep collecting rings to top it up.
Sonic Superstars – Trip’s Super transformation
While the Super Sonic ability turns Sonic yellow and gives him a cool floating run animation, that doesn’t happen with the other three main characters.
As in most previous Sonic games, Super Tails, Super Knuckles and Super Amy Rose get the same powers as Super Sonic, but they don’t transform: they just get a sparkling and ghosting effect over them.
However, once you unlock Trip, you’ll discover that her Super transformation is even more impressive than Sonic’s.
After unlocking Trip, collect 50 rings and use the Super power-up and she’ll turn into a giant dragon.
In her dragon form, Trip can float around wherever she likes.
She can also breathe fire at enemies, though obviously she’s still invincible anyway so if you’d rather just fly into enemies and kill them that way, you can.
As with the other Super abilities though, Trip will lose rings while she’s in her dragon form, and will transform back to her normal state if they run out.
