Sonic Frontiers: How to drain the water in Ares Island
You can’t proceed until you figure out how to empty the lake: here’s the solution
In Sonic Frontiers, draining the water in Ares Island can be a little confusing.
At one point in the game, you’re faced with a lake, with a giant chain sticking out of it.
You’re told that there’s a huge plug in the lake, and that you have to “drain the water to move on”.
However, although there’s a large gun next to the lake, it’s not clear how to fire it and where to shoot it. Worry no more, as we have the solution.
Sonic Frontiers – How to drain the water
At this point in the game you may have already encountered a giant gun, which could be powered up by climbing it. As such, you may think that’s the same situation with the gun here.
That isn’t actually the case, the gun is completely dead and needs ammunition before it’ll work. Luckily, there’s a large bomb on the other side of the river from the gun.
Head over to the large bomb and use your ‘cyloop’ ability to draw a ring around it. This will actiuvate it and put it in Sonic’s hands, but it’ll blow up in 30 seconds so you need to be quick.
Once you have the bomb, run back to the gun and insert it into the back – there’s a big marker showing you where it should go.
After this you need to actually fire the gun. The game’s dialogue before this task begins talks about needing enough force to drain the water: this gives the impression that you need to fire the bomb at the chain itself to clear it. Again, that isn’t the case.
Instead, if you aim all the way up you’ll see a large black shape with a red diamond symbol in the middle of it (as seen in the above screenshot).
Aim directly at this and fire to turn the diamond blue. This activates a mechanism that pulls the chain upwards.
This eventually pulls out the plug and drains the water, allowing you to continue on your journey.
