Update - Steven becomes free
Steven will be one of four characters who are free to select between August 15-30.
Steven will join Arya Stark, LeBron James and Batman as the four characters that players will be able to choose without having to unlock them.
Any progress players make levelling up these characters will be saved, even when the characters are locked again after August 30.
This means if you choose to unlock them later (either with in-game coins or Gleamium), they’ll still have the progress you previously earned for them.
MultiVersus Steven Universe guide – Who is Steven Universe?
Steven Universe is the titular protagonist of the Cartoon Network animated series Steven Universe, which ran from 2013 to 2019.
Steven is an enthusiastic young lad who discovers that he’s actually half-human, half-Gem.
It turns out his late mother used to be the leader of the Crystal Gems, a group of alien warriors who exist as magical gemstones who project humanoid forms.
Steven has a small pink gem in his belly button: this is part of his mother, who gave up her physical form to create him.
This gem gives him a number of magical powers, from creating shields to healing to even reviving the dead.
Steven was voiced by Zach Callison, but in MultiVersus he’ll instead be voiced by Daniel DiVenere, who’s taking on the role for the first time.
MultiVersus Steven Universe guide – Skin variants
Steven’s default skin is his trademark red t-shirt with a big yellow star on it.
At launch, he has one variant, which is called ‘Coach Steven’.
This is based on an outfit he wears in the Coach Steven episode of the show, and gives him a red vest, sunglasses and a headband.
The Coach Steven variant can’t be unlocked through gameplay, and has to be bought with 500 Gleamium (the game’s premium currency).
MultiVersus Steven Universe guide – Fighting strategies
Because the show focuses on Steven’s ability to protect others with his gem powers, it’s no surprise that he’s a ‘support’ character in MultiVersus.
While he does have his own range of attacks, then, he’s best suited to helping out his partner and making sure they stay out of danger.
While it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on how your partner is doing in MultiVersus, it’s particularly useful when you’re playing as Steven, because of his dodge move.
When you press the dodge button and hold it down you’ll create a shield, not just for Steven but for his partner too.
This shield has the same properties as armour, and can take three hits before it’s broken.
Be wary, however, because those three hits are shared between Steven and his partner, and because it gives an armour buff it also means purple armour-breaking moves can bypass it.
MultiVersus Steven Universe guide – Moves
Bubble Boy
(Neutral, ground or air)
This move sees Steven firing a bolt which tethers to the ground, and is joined to him by a beam of energy.
After a couple of seconds this beam will trigger and any opponents standing over it will take both damage and a ‘bubble’ debuff.
The latter causes a number to appear over them, and if you can hit them enough times to reach the maximum you’ll trap them in a bubble.
This puts them out of action for a while, but that’s all – because they’re in a bubble, you can’t damage them.
Shield Wall, Activated
(Side, ground or air)
This is a projectile attack which can be charged up – the longer you charge it, the further it travels.
The projectile does damage, but it has a secondary purpose – once it either hits an opponent or runs out, it will generate a large purple shield.
This shield can block enemy attacks, and can also grant allies armour if they pass through it.
The shield comes with a cooldown so you can’t just spam projectiles. While it’s charging up again, doing the Side Special makes Steven do a dash kick attack.
Shield Stepper
(Up, ground or air)
This is a multi-purpose move in which Steven looks upwards and holds up a large purple shield (similar to the one that spawns during his Side Special).
The shield’s first purpose is to damage any enemies that are in the way when it spawns.
Its second purpose is to block incoming enemy air attacks, preventing them from reaching Steven or his ally if they stand underneath the shield.
Finally, its third purpose is to act as a mid-air platform for Steven or his ally, should they need it.
Watermelon Steven, Go
(Down, ground)
This strange move has Steven planting a watermelon seed.
As Steven or his ally stand over the seed it’ll slowly heal them, reducing their damage stat by a little.
After a few seconds the seed will then grow and turn into a little Watermelon Steven clone who runs around attacking your enemies for you.
This is quite a useful little move because Watermelon Steven is a complete pest.
X-Treme Moves
(Down, air)
Naturally, you can’t grow seeds in thin air, so performing Steven’s Down Special in mid-air pulls off this move instead.
Steven takes out his shield and puts it underneath him like a snowboard. When he lands on the ground he then slides forwards for a while.
If Steven manages to hit an enemy while he’s sliding, he’ll bounce back up into the air.
When this happens, if you perform the Down Special command again he’ll combo into a diving kick to do extra damage.
