MultiVersus Jake guide – Who is Jake?

Jake the Dog is one of the two protagonists in Cartoon Network’s animated series Adventure Time, which ran from 2010 to 2018.

Jake is the mentor of his best friend, Finn the Human, but that doesn’t always mean he gives the best advice.

Jake’s main attribute is his ability to stretch his body and transform into a variety of shapes.

John DiMaggio (who also voices Bender in Futurama) voiced Jake in the series, and has returned to reprise the role in MultiVersus.

Jake’s gender-swapped alternative Cake is also in the game as an unlockable skin, and is voiced by her original voice actor Roz Ryan.

MultiVersus Jake guide – Skin variants

Jake doesn’t usually wear any clothes, so his default skin is just him, in the buff.

At launch, he has one variant, which is called ‘Cake’.

Cake is the female version of Jake, who appears in the Ice King’s fan-fiction stories in which Finn and Jake are gender-swapped.

Cake can be unlocked by reaching tier 15 of the preseason Battle Pass’s premium route.

MultiVersus Jake guide – Fighting strategies

Jake is a ‘bruiser’ character, which means he’s at his best up close and dealing out physical attacks.

Although he’s one of the smaller characters in the game, his ability to morph means he actually has a longer reach than many characters taller than him.

His jumping side attack is an extremely long punch, offering the longest reach of any of his moves, so you can potentially take grounded opponents by surprise by doing a tiny hop and performing it.

Jake’s jumping side attack has a very long range, and can be charged for long enough that you can perform it once he lands

A number of his standard attacks also break armour, making him a potentially annoying opponent for characters who rely heavily on it like Wonder Woman.

Ultimately, Jake is quite a well-balanced character, whose only real weakness is a lack of good long-distance projectile moves, meaning you do really have to stay close to opponents.

Rubber Stomach, Dude

(Neutral, ground or air)

Jake’s Neutral Special has him eating his opponent in a huge gulp, similar to Wario in the Smash Bros games.

Once they’ve been eaten, Jake can walk around for a while with them in his stomach.

You can then hold the Special button again to aim them, then release to spit them out as a projectile.

You can also eat your ally if you want – this will let them aim themselves and spit themselves out as a projectile.

Giddy Up

(Side, ground or air)

Given Jake’s ability to transform into anything he likes, it should come as no surprise that his specials focus on this.

His Side Special transforms him into a horse, which you can then move around and plough into opponents.

The longer you hold down the Special button, the longer this move lasts – a little gauge appears underneath Jake showing when it’ll run out.

Allies can also jump on you while you’re galloping and use you as a moving platform.

Stretchin’ Out

(Up, ground or air)

This move is a weird one because it has two uses. Performing it and holding the Special button down makes Jake stretch upwards into the air.

You can control Jake as he continues to stretch, making him look like one of those inflatable wavy-hand things you see outside car dealerships.

MultiVersus Jake Guide: Moves and strategies

If an opponent hits into Jake while he’s like this they’ll be knocked back, causing slight damage to them.

Once the move ends, Jake’s backside will snap back to join his head, doing damage to anyone it hits along the way.

If you’re fighting against Jake and he does this move, bear in mind that only his head can take damage.

That’s Heavy, Dude

(Down, ground or air)

Jake’s final move lets him transform into a house, car or boat (it’s random which one it is).

As long as you hold down the button he will continue to take this form, and can slowly move across the ground.

MultiVersus Jake Guide: Moves and strategies

While he’s transformed, projectiles bounce off Jake and both allies and enemies can use him as a bouncy springboard of sorts.

If an ally jumps on him this will also make a little shockwave appear around him, doing damage to nearby enemies.

The actual transformation can do damage too, especially if you perform it in mid-air (because after all, if a house lands on you it’s going to hurt).
