Fisch Appraiser – How appraisal works and when it’s worth it

Not sure what the Appraiser does in Fisch? This curious NPC charges a pretty penny for their services. In the right situation, you can make a higher return.

In case you haven’t figured it out already, the weight of a fish plays a major role in how much you can sell it for. It’s a sliding scale system, with each extra gram affecting a creature’s resale value at the merchant.

What does the Appraiser NPC do in Fisch?

The Fisch Appraiser NPC can change the weight of a fish and even apply a Mutation if you’re lucky, dramatically increasing the resale value of the fish even further.

Appraising the same fish can be repeated as many times as you want.

Appraising a fish in Fisch.
The Appraiser can change the sell value of a fish for a price.

To appraise a Fisch, click it from your inventory to hold it, then ask the NPC to appraise it. It’ll cost you 450C$, and the result is entirely random, but if you’re lucky, you’ll come out with a fish worth more than the cost of the service.

When appraising a fish, you’ll see one of two notices: that the weight of the fish has deceased, or that it has increased. The former is bad. The latter is good. It’s that simple.

That’s because fish weight can vary wildly. For example, the smallest Isonade (a Mythical rarity fish) can weigh in at 600kg and sells for around 3692C$. At its heaviest, 3250kg, the Merchant will lap it up for a whopping 20,000C$. That’s over 500% more money for the same fish.

Even taking the Appraisal fee into account, it’s a huge profit.

If you’re lucky, the Appraiser may apply a Mutation like Electric or Celestial. This increases the sale price of the fish even further, making it easier to justify the repeated cost of the service against the right fish.

Where is the Appraiser?

You’ll find the Appraiser just left of the general merchant in Moosewood. They’re stationed at a table against the side of the shop. Just talk t

Is the Appraiser worth it?

While the Appraiser system is a gamble in any situation, the cost is static, so you can mitigate the risk by only appraising high-value fish caught at the lower end of their weight scale.

Looking back at the Isonade example, you have a higher chance to earn a profit if you appraise an Isonade at the lower end of the weight scale.

Gaining a Mutation through the Fisch appraiser NPC.
Rolling a mutation can increase the value of your fish more than just a weight change.

Further to that, if you’re lucky enough to have it appraised closer to its max weight and with a mutation like Celestial, its value could balloon to over 50,000C$ for a lavish return on the 450C$ cost.

In most cases, this means sticking to rarer fish that sell for over 1,500C$ to be on the safe side.

Appraising a  Mythical fish has a much higher chance of paying for its Appraisal cost than a common or rare fish that can’t sell for over 450C$ without a mutation.

The appraisal process can be repeated on the same fish as many times as needed. Just be aware of the cost of each appraisal and consider the average weight of the fish and its possible worth.

The Appraiser’s ability to add a mutation also makes them semi-viable in the process of Rod Crafting. You can appraise materials like Magic Thread, potentially obtaining a necessary mutation like Atlantean without needing the rod said mutation is typically linked to.

You can even check the sale price of a fish at the Appraiser without paying the appraisal fee. This is useful to work out whether it makes sense to roll the weight and mutation of a fish again.
