Here’s everything you need to know about Relationships in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
Looking for a Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth relationship guide?
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth features a deep relationship system, with each of the game’s main companions forming a strong bond with Cloud over the course of the game.
In this guide, we’re going to explain how the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Relationship system works, how you can improve your relationship in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and how to check your relationship level in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
How does the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Relationship System Work?
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth features a brand new relationship system that impacts several different areas of the game. It’s introduced early in your adventure and is a vital part of a large late-game quest.
But how does it work? Well, in short, there are a few things that impact your relationship level:
- Specific Conversations
- Synergy Skills
- Side Missions
- Main Mission Events

- Specific Conversations
Throughout Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, you’ll be faced with conversations that have dialogue options. These are time-based, so be careful.
If you let the time expire on a conversation option then you’ll pick whatever one your cursor is closer to at that time, which can lead to unfortunate consequences.
These conversations are often a test of how much you know the character you’re talking to, or what kind of response they would like, so you’re going to have to pay attention. These aren’t make-or-break for you to achieve the relationship level, it just helps it along.
- Synergy Skills
Synergy Skills are attacks that can be performed by two party members together. These can be things like attacks that do a huge amount of damage, or ones that change the ATB bar from two sections into three.
Once learned, these Synergy Skills become available as long as both members of the skill have enough ATB charge. Once performed for the first time, the relationship level between Cloud and that character will increase, so make sure to unlock all of them as you progress through the game.
- Side Quests
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is full of side quests, with each of the game’s open areas featuring up to 10 quests. These quests aren’t long, but they often hold some of the best writing in the game, and plenty of laughs too. These side quests also increase your relationship with members of your party. While it’s later spelled out to you in the quest menu which relationship the quest will improve, you can also tell me by watching the intro cutscene. The vast majority of the time, whichever party member takes an active role in the cutscenes alongside Cloud is the one that will have their relationship level raised.
- Main Mission Events
Some events during Final Fantasy 7’s Main Missions will influence your relationships with the rest of your party. For example, without spoiling anything, there’s a moment when you have to choose which pair of companions to fight alongside, doing this will improve your relationship with those party members.
How to check your relationship level in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
There are two ways you can check your relationship level in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
The first is the small smiley face that appears above characters in the open-world areas of the game. These are colour-coded depending on what level you are, but it’s also easy enough to check how much the circle around the character’s smiley face has been filled in. You’ll first notice them after you talk to Red XIII at the start of Chapter 2.
The second way to check is that when you finish the game, there will be a menu which shows you exactly what you need to do to fulfill the relationship requirements in the game. All of this can be done via Chapter Select.
