How to find the Sphinx
Finding the Sphinx is the first part of this puzzle, and requires a rather significant adventure in itself. You can reach the Sphinx either via the Ancient Battleground or the Misty Marshes. If you’re unsure where either of those places are, consult our Dragon’s Dogma 2 full map. For the latter, look for the large area shrouded in fog.
How to get to the Sphinx through the Misty Marshes
The Misty Marshes is permanently obscured on your map. It’s misty. Even once you’ve fully explored it and defeated what is presumably the cause of the mist, the fog never leaves.
Traversing the Misty Marshes isn’t too much hassle. Once you’re in the area, large torches light the path. At the top of the area, you’ll notice sunlight piercing through the mist, meaning you’re on the right track. You’ll emerge through a rocky path into the Mountain Shrine: the home of the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Sphinx.
How to get to the Sphinx through the Ancient Battleground
Alternatively, you can go through the Ancient Battleground, which can be found north of the Checkpoint Rest Town. This area is teeming with enemies, as well as a Dragon that is incredibly high level, so be careful. Reach the crumbling castle and climb to the top of it. Here you’ll face a troll. Once you’ve reached the highest point on the battlements, look behind them, and you’ll see an opening.
This opening leads to the Worldsend Cave. This cave is winding and full of enemies, so make sure you’re prepared before you go through it. Once you’re through, you’ll soon see a wall with markings of the Sphinx on it, and some other statues of the Sphinx which will ensure you’re on the right path.
As mentioned earlier in the guide, we recommended that you bring a Portcrystal with you, and plenty of Ferrystones, considering how much back and forth you’re going to need to do between the Sphinx and the location of the riddles.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Eyes Solution
- Reward: Wakestone
The first riddle from the Sphinx is the Riddle of Eyes. The Sphinx will ask that you return to the nearby cave and retrieve the most valuable item. Head to the cave at the bottom of the shrine.
You don’t even really need to explore the cave. Just walk forward slightly, turn around, and look up, and you’ll see a chest. Inside that chest is the valuable item for the Riddle of Eyes: a Sealing Phial. Take it back to the Sphinx to continue.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Madness
- Reward: Portcrystal
This part of the Sphinx’s quest asks you to bring your most beloved to the Sphinx. This is the character with whom you have the most affinity. Annoyingly, there’s no way to tell which character has the highest affinity with the player. In fact, this is only revealed in two ways; an end-game cutscene (at which point it’s too late), or when you receive the trophy for reaching maximum affinity with a character.
There is way around this. If you’ve avoided the gift/affinity system, you’re likely to have a higher affinity with Captain Brant: the game’s main quest-giver. Alternatively, you can craft a Bunch of Flowers and gift them to the same NPC over and over to boost their affinity above anyone else. Now all you have to do is bring them to the Sphinx.
You can either pick them up, and then use a Ferrystone to your Portcrystal, or you can seal them in the Sealing Phial that you received from the last Sphinx riddle.
Once you’re back at the Sphinx, place them on the plinth and confirm to the Sphinx that this is your answer. If you’re correct, you’ll receive the reward: a Portcrystal for fast travel.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Wisdom
- Reward: 1,200 Rift Crystals
This strange quest involves finding a Pawn that is named after the Sphinx. You’ll probably have seen a few of them on your travels and wondered what was going on, but as it turns out, this is the key to solving the Riddle of Wisdom.
Don’t worry though, you don’t have to search very far.. Head to Harve Village and go to the Riftstone of Fellowship. This Riftstone exclusively contains pawns that have Sphinx names. Recruit one of these, bring your party back to the Sphinx, and then place them on the plinth. This will complete the Riddle of Wisdom.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Conviction
- Reward: The item you gave the Sphinx
The Riddle of Conviction is a silly one. The Sphinx asks for your most valuable item. This is a trick: it doesn’t matter what item you give the Sphinx, as once you’ve done this, you’ll be rewarded with that exact same item in the chest. She was just testing you. What a tease.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Rumination
- Reward: 3x Ferrystone
This is the most ridiculous part of an already ridiculous questline. In the Riddle of Rumination, the Sphinx asks you to return to the first place you found a Seeker’s Token.
Seeker’s Tokens are collectibles you’ve probably come across in your travels. However, unless you were being incredibly meticulous, the idea of you remembering where you found your first one is practically non-existent.
If, by some miracle, you return to where you first picked up a Seeker’s Token, you’ll find a Finder’s Token. For this stupid task, you’ll be rewarded with 3 Ferrystone.
If you’re on PC, you can use one of the best Dragon’s Dogma 2 mods to figure out exactly where your first Seeker’s Token was found.
Sphinx second location: How to find the Sphinx after she flies off
After completing the Riddle of Rumination, the Sphinx will fly off to her second and final location.
You’ll now find the the Sphinx West of the Checkpoint Rest Town. Bring the Portcrystal you left at the first shrine and leave it here. You’ll have to do a lot of back and forth for this next set of challenges.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Reunion
- Reward: 100,000 Gold
She missed you. By finding the Sphinx in her second location, you’ll complete the Ridde of Reunion. For this, you’ll be gifted 100,000 Gold.
The next four Riddles can appear in any order. We’ve listed them below in the order they were presented to us.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Differentiation
- Reward: Whimsical Daydream
This quest requires you to find the doppelganger of a character that the Sphinx presents you with. This strange-looking fellow has a lookalike who can be found on either side of the Checkpoint Rest Town wall.
What makes this more complicated is that the person you’re looking for is actually one of a set of twins: Dante and Virgil. These twins reside on both the Battahl and Vermund sides of the way.
The way to tell them apart is the direction of their hair. When you’re presented by the Sphinx with the person you’re required to find, take a screenshot of them or a picture on your phone, with a focus on the direction their hair points. You’re looking for the twin with the exact same hair.
Then, like with a few previous tasks, you need to bring them back to the Sphinx, so grab them, and return to the Sphinx via Ferrystone.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Contest
- Reward: Ring of Ambition
The Riddle of Contest is a simple combat mission. You just have to defeat the enemies. The issue is that your damage will be reduced to practically zero. Slapping away at the enemies could take hours.
So how do you kill the enemies during the Riddle of Contest? Pick them up and throw them off the cliff. Job done.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Recollection
- Reward: Unmaking Arrow DO NOT USE
This Sphinx riddle asks you how many riddles you’ve completed thus far. This is a tricky one: it only counts the ones you did successfully. If you’ve followed the guide till now, you’ll have completed the initial 5 riddles, as well as an undetermined amount of riddles since the Sphinx flew off to her new location.
The best way to tell what you’ve done is to check this guide and just count. Once you’ve decided on your answer, return to the Sphinx and she’ll give you the Unmaking Arrow. DO NOT USE THIS UNTIL WE TELL YOU!
Dragon’s Dogma 2 Riddle of Futility
- Reward: Eternal Bond
The final standard Sphinx riddle requires you bring a vase to the character Maurits. This character resides just outside of Bakbattahl, next to a portrait of the Sphinx itself.
The issue is that if you’re hit while carrying the amphora, it will shatter. If you take damage from falling, it will shatter. If you do anything at all that constitutes your character taking damage, it will shatter. And you can’t fast travel with it.
The solution is to simply bring Maurits to the Sphinx before you accept the Amphora vase. Grab him, use a Ferrystone back to your Portcrystal, and you’re done.
For your troubles, you’ll be given the Eternal Bond, which greatly improves your affinity with any character you give it to.
WARNING – Before moving forward you MUST choose a vocation that can equip a bow. If you don’t, it’s practically impossible to complete the final challenge.
The Final Riddle
- Reward: Eternal Wakestone
You probably expected this, but the final riddle is to defeat the Sphinx. This will grant you the final prize and a trophy/achievement.
The Sphinx is incredibly tough. By far the toughest boss in the game. You’re going to have to be very careful with how you handle her.
The key is to defeat her before she flies off, which will fail the challenge, invalidating the effort you’ve gone to in the previous challenges.
Attack the Sphinx after she’s finished speaking and her health bar will appear. You have to fight her until her necklace glows purple, then hit her with the Unmaking Arrow. For the love of God, do not miss. If you do, even after all the damage you’ve done, there’s still a high chance she’ll fly away, and you’ll miss the final reward.
For completing this herculean task, you’ll be given the Eternal Wakestone. This item isn’t eternal. Essentially it will let you revive everyone within a certain radius of the player.
Once it’s been used it will then break. This is the only Eternal Wakestone in the game and the only real way to undo the damage caused by a Pawn left to go rampant with the Dragonsplague disease.
